What’s in the name? Not much, really. But there is a little something: imagine that you are making your way through life from childhood to adulthood, and from adulthood to senior-citizen-hood. Okay--so when you were young, you liked to put coins in a piggy bank, a train bank, or a monkey bank, or whatever. Admit it--you liked coins. But when you arrived at the ripe old age of a teenager, coins were not-so-desired. Instead, you wanted cash--cold, hard, green cash in the form of $5, $10, $20, and preferably $50 or $100 bills. Forget the pocket change--you had graduated to something much more desirable and worthy of status.
This preference for cash extended into your young adulthood. After all, your focus was on paying for school, getting a job, and earning more of the green stuff. Then, after awhile, the green paper didn’t seem so intrinsically valuable anymore. You longed for the days when you held your treasured coins, admired the glimmering shine, and counted each with great care. You perhaps browsed a coin catalog or the internet and rediscovered your past. Indeed, you missed the days of handling coins. Your childhood became transcendent and reaching forward through time slapped you in the forehead with a desire to investigate, purchase, collect, and admire coins.
This is what I call the COIN TRAP. Whether you like it or not, you have been trapped. You fell into the trap way back in your childhood, and rediscovered that you were still in the coin trap even as an adult, and you will forever be trapped even into your senior-citizen-season of your life and beyond. So forget about trying to escape from the COIN TRAP. There is no escaping. Just sit back and enjoy it.
